Explanation Matter Tal which develops almost north-south direction and Zermatt locates at the upper most part of this valley(Tal in Germany), which is the city of base camp for the Matterhorn and also the world famous ski resort. Slopes along the valley are mostly of Gneiss rocks and suffering for the occurrences of the rock slides due to the stress release by the disappearance of glacier. In April 8, 1994, at Randa village about 10km north to Zermatt, a large scale rock slide(volume; ca.30million m3) occurred on the slope facing to the east and followed by the formation of the landslide dam(Height;100m, Length;100m, Volume of the reservoir;3million m3 ).
