Explanation The landslide shown in the photo occurred when local rice crops were maturing. The photo shows that the rice was carefully harvested by hand and combine harvester (appearing just above the head scarp). The rice was scattered on the landslide moving body, and the area was back-filled by a digger. This slow-moving landslide, consisting of tuffaceous rock of the Kobe Group, was a typical re-activated landslide in this region. It was relatively small (70 m long and 70 m wide), although the landslide threatened surrounding private homes and productive rice paddy fields because it narrowed the river channel.
